Accommodations for Test Takers with Disabilities or Health-related Needs

ETS is committed to serving test takers with disabilities or health-related needs by providing reasonable accommodations that are appropriate given the purpose of the test. Testing accommodations are available for test takers who meet ETS requirements.

See below for a list of available accommodations for the TOEFL Essentials test.

Practice tests

Practice tests that support screen readers and include transcripts and closed captioning are available. We strongly encourage you to use these practice tests so you’re fully aware of the kinds of interactions you’ll encounter in the actual test. If you require practice tests in an alternate format, please contact ETS Disability Services.

The following are some of the available accommodations for the TOEFL Essentials test.

Technical accommodations

  • Screen magnification
  • Selectable background and foreground colors

Adaptive accommodations

  • Braille test (in contracted or uncontracted braille)
  • Large-print version of the test

Do you need a different accommodation?

If you'd like to request accommodations other than those listed above, describe them in Part II of the Testing Accommodations Request Form found in the Bulletin Supplement (PDF).

How to request accommodations for the TOEFL Essentials test

When applying for disability accommodations, be sure to review these documents:

To request a large-print copy of the Bulletin and Supplement, contact ETS Disability Services.

You’ll need to submit your request as early as possible and have your accommodations approved by ETS Disability Services before you can schedule your test.

Documentation review takes approximately 6 weeks once your request and completed paperwork are received. If you’re required to submit additional documentation, the review can take approximately another 2 to 4 weeks from the time the new documents are received until the review is complete.

Once you've been approved, you'll receive an email with instructions on how to register for the test. Please wait for your approval email before scheduling a test appointment.

The easiest, most convenient way to submit your request is through your ETS account. Simply log in to your account, select “TOEFL Accommodation Status/New Request” on the home page and follow the instructions on the screen.

You can also email your request or send it by mail or courier service. For directions on how to do so, see the Bulletin Supplement
