Abstract
Effective teacher professional development requires attention to both the content and the process—the what and the how—of teacher change. This paper addresses the question: If assessment for learning (AfL) is the content, do teacher learning communities (TLCs) provide the necessary support for teachers to further their understanding? The paper will provide an overview of assessment for learning but will focus on a discussion regarding the development and implementation of teacher learning communities focused on assessment for learning within one district. The paper concludes with the argument that the combination of AfL and TLCs provides a sound, research-based model for improving both professional practice and student achievement.
