Abstract

This paper presents a taxonomy of the semantic relations that appear in GRE verbal analogy items. The impetus for development of the taxonomy was the need to classify analogy items for a study of the sources of item difficulty conducted by Bejar, Embretson, Peirce, and Wild (1984); it is based on the taxonomies developed by Chaffin and Herrmann (1984) and Whitely (1977). The purpose in presenting it here is to make the taxonomy available to a wider audience in the hope that it will be a useful tool in both the development of and in research on analogy items. (22pp.)
