PPAT® Assessment

An effective measure of a teacher candidate's readiness for the classroom

Select any step to learn more about the PPAT® assessment.

PPAT Scores

ETS automatically provides PPAT assessment test-taker score reports to the educator preparation program (EPP) selected by the test taker at registration. For state certification departments to have access to score reports, the test taker must select them as a score recipient during registration. In states that have adopted the PPAT assessment, the state agency is an automatic score recipient.

These reports are available in the ETS® Data Manager. To sign in or request access to the ETS Data Manager, visit ETS Client Services for Educator Licensure.

The test-taker score report contains valuable information about their performance, including:

  • a summary page with their score for each task and cumulative assessment score
  • a detail page for each task indicating scores for each step within a task and feedback for each step score

See a Sample Test-taker Score Report (PDF).

Passing scores

Each state and licensing organization determines its own passing requirements for the PPAT assessment. If a state agency hasn’t established a passing requirement, individual EPPs may determine this requirement. See passing scores by state or EPP.

Calculating scores

Step scores are summed to determine the task score for each of the three tasks. The score for Task 4 is multiplied by two to reflect the double weighting of the task. Tasks that are not submitted receive a score of 0.

The three task scores are summed to determine the overall assessment score. As noted above, the score for Task 4 is doubled.

Reviewing feedback for step scores

Each task of the assessment contains multiple steps. The score report includes general feedback for each step score within a task to help test takers improve the quality of their evidence in their step responses, and help them determine if they want to resubmit a task.

Feedback doesn’t appear on score reports accessed by EPPs or state certification departments in the ETS Data Manager. View the feedback for all steps and score levels:

Steps with a score of 0

A step score of 0 will be applied for any of the following:

  • The written commentary for a step is missing or doesn’t address the activity and guiding prompts of that step.
  • The required artifacts are missing or illegible. Links to artifacts on a third-party site aren’t acceptable. A step that requires multiple artifacts needs to have at least one artifact attached to the step to be scoreable.
  • The artifact linked to the written commentary for the step fails to provide the required evidence.
  • The required video is missing or the test taker edited a video segment.

Resubmission scores

After test takers receive their scores, there are two resubmission windows for the registration. If their assessment score falls below the passing score, they’re eligible to resubmit any or all three tasks (Tasks 2, 3 or 4 only) for a fee. The task with the highest total task score, whether from the original submission or from the resubmission, is reported on the final score report.

Test takers who don’t pass

Test takers who don’t pass the assessment during the original submission window or the resubmission window need to retake the assessment in a future submission window. Test takers should consult their EPP for guidance on how to move forward.
