Australian government minimum score requirements

TOEFL meets the DHA’s minimum score requirements for a variety of visas, ensuring you meet all necessary criteria.

Functional English A total band score of at least 32 based on the 4 test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening
Vocational English At least 4 for listening, 4 for reading, 14 for writing and 14 for speaking
Competent English At least 12 for listening, 13 for reading, 21 for writing and 18 for speaking
Proficient English At least 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing and 23 for speaking
Superior English At least 28 for listening, 29 for reading, 30 for writing and 26 for speaking

We recommend you check the Department of Home Affairs website to find out exactly what score you need to achieve for temporary residency, skilled migration, student and partner visas.

 

If you’re applying to an Australian university or educational institution, check with them directly about their admissions requirements.

If you’re applying for an Australian visa, be sure to register for a TOEFL iBT test at a test center. The Australian Department of Home Affairs doesn’t currently accept any English-language tests that are taken at home, including the TOEFL iBT Home Edition. TOEFL iBT scores for test dates from July 26, 2023 to May 4, 2024 continue to not be accepted by the department for visa purposes.
