TOEFL® EssentialsTM

Expand your range of applicants with a testing option that has the quality, reliability and security you expect from a TOEFL test

Accepting Scores for the TOEFL Essentials Test

You don't have to choose between the TOEFL iBT test and the TOEFL Essentials test — you can accept both! And doing so will give you the broadest range of qualified international applicants of any test provider.

If your institution already has a 4-digit score-user code for TOEFL tests, you and your applicants will use that same code for TOEFL Essentials scores. If you don't have a TOEFL score-user code, apply for one.

If your institution uses a data management system for test scores, it will need to be configured to accept TOEFL Essentials scores, as with any new test. View Score Reporting for guidance about updating your data system.

Score acceptance is increasing

An increasing number of universities and other institutions have confirmed their acceptance of TOEFL Essentials scores as part of their program's English-language requirements, and the list continues to grow daily.

A survey of nearly 250 institutions in the United States, Canada and the U.K. showed that:

  • 90% of institutions/programs would likely accept TOEFL Essentials scores for admissions use for classes enrolling in 2022, with 71% likely to accept it for full or conditional admission
  • 95% of surveyed institutions saw the TOEFL Essentials test as beneficial in attracting quality applicants, with over 70% seeing it as highly or very beneficial
