Marisol Kevelson is an associate research scientist in the ETS Research Institute. She earned a doctorate in Sociology and Education, with an emphasis on education policy, from Columbia University Teachers College in 2012. Her research agenda is focused on potential interventions to improve equitable educational outcomes, in particular for students from historically marginalized populations lacking access to high-quality educational opportunities. In the 15+ years she has been researching and evaluating educational interventions and services, she has designed, led, and/or executed a variety of research projects using data to identify solutions that support students and educators. Many of these projects used rigorous experimental or quasi-experimental designs, and many were mixed-method studies for which she took a lead role in developing instruments, collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and developing accessible publications and presentations. She has a good sense of what works in the real world, thanks to opportunities to manage and teach in educational intervention programs and work on nonprofit and philanthropic teams. Currently she is the principal investigator of the Equity-Forward Score Reporting Research project, which is developing and testing out alternative ways of presenting national large-scale assessment results with the goal of reducing the extent to which they trigger deficit thinking and negative stereotyping of students from minoritized groups. She is also a collaborator on the ETS Teaching Pathways Research Program, which aims to develop and test innovative approaches to support teacher learning and assessment, and for which she was awarded an NSF Partnership Development grant.
