Off-campus Testing Information for Test Takers

By taking one of the ETS Major Field Tests, you enable your institution to get the data it needs to prove the effectiveness of your degree program — ensuring that you and future students earn the highest quality degree. Institutions use the Major Field Tests to measure students' mastery of their chosen field of study, assess the effectiveness of major programs of study, and improve curriculum and student learning outcomes.

Testing off-campus allows you to test remotely in your home or another convenient location with internet access and a webcam. If your program has identified you as a candidate to take the ETS Major Field Tests off-campus using a remote proctoring service, you’ll find important information below.

Off-campus sessions proctored by your institution:

Off-campus sessions proctored by ProctorU:

Follow the instructions in the email you received to schedule your appointment with the remote proctoring service. Make sure you follow the instructions and timelines carefully. If you have been instructed by your institution to pay for the test and/or remote proctoring session, you’ll be asked to pay via credit card or PayPal^® at the time you schedule your appointment.

Off-campus sessions proctored by your institution:

Off-campus sessions proctored by ProctorU:

You must change or cancel your ETS Major Field Test registration no later than 24 hours before your appointment to avoid forfeiting associated fees.
You can change or cancel your testing appointment online at remote.mft.ets.org. When prompted, you’ll need to enter the authorization code provided in your appointment confirmation email.
You cannot reschedule your appointment beyond the date identified by your institution on your invitation email.
If you don’t change or cancel your appointment for testing as indicated above, you’ll forfeit all associated fees.

All test takers are responsible for having valid and acceptable identification each time they start their testing session. It’s your responsibility to ensure that your ID documents are up-to-date and available on the day of the test.

Please read the following sections for acceptable primary and supplemental ID documents and allowed exceptions.

General ID requirements

ID documents must meet all the following requirements. Each ID document must:

be an original document; photocopied documents are not acceptable
be valid; expired documents (bearing expiration dates that have passed) are not acceptable
bear the test taker's full name matching exactly (excluding accents and spaces) the name used to register
bear a recent photograph that clearly matches the test taker
bear the test taker's signature (the name and signature on the ID document must match)

are not a U.S. citizen and you are testing within the United States
have a two-part last name
are in the process of renewing your driver's license
are in the military and your military ID does not contain your signature

Primary ID documents

The following ID documents are acceptable within your country of citizenship:

passport
government-issued driver's license
state or province ID card (including those issued by motor vehicle agencies)
national ID card
military ID card

Supplemental ID documents

You may be required to provide a supplemental ID if the test administrator questions your primary ID document and/or if your primary ID document is otherwise acceptable but does not bear your full name, photograph or signature.
Supplemental ID documents may not be used to resolve name discrepancies. The last name on your primary ID must match (excluding accents and spaces) the name you used when you registered for the test.

The following ID documents are generally acceptable as supplemental ID:

government-issued ID card (including, but not limited to, those listed under Primary ID Documents)
student ID card
Confirmation of identity letter from your educational institution. This letter must be typed or printed on the original letterhead of the educational institution you attend(ed) and, in addition to meeting all of the ID Document Requirements, must include your date of birth and the date issued. Additionally, a school official's signature and the school seal must be present and both must overlap your photograph. Such letters are valid for only one year from the date issued.

Unacceptable ID documents

The following documents are not acceptable as primary or supplemental ID under any circumstances:

any document that is photocopied or expired
any document that does not bear your last name matching exactly (excluding accents and spaces) the name used to register
international driver's license
draft classification card
international student ID
credit/debit card of any kind
notary-prepared letter or document
birth certificate
Social Security card
employee ID card
any temporary ID
diplomatic, consulate or embassy ID card

Exceptions and requirements

Testing Outside Your Country of Citizenship

You must present a valid passport with your name, photograph and signature as your primary ID document.
Non-U.S. citizens testing within the United States must present a passport that meets all of the ID document requirements.
If your passport is not written in English-language letters, you must also present as supplemental ID at least one of the documents listed under Supplemental ID Documents. This document must also contain your name, a recent, recognizable photo and be in English.
Diplomatic and embassy ID cards cannot be used as primary identification in place of a passport.
The following documents may be acceptable if presented along with at least one of the documents listed under Supplemental ID Documents.
- Permanent Resident Card/Resident Alien Card (Form I-551 or I-151)
- Temporary Resident Card (Form I-688)
- Employment Authorization Card (Form I-688A, I-688B or I-766)

Two-part last name

If the ID document you will present on the day of the test contains a two-part last name, the name you used when registering must exactly match (excluding accents and spaces) your ID. You cannot use a supplemental ID to resolve name discrepancies.

Driver's license renewals (United States only)

If your driver's license has expired but you present it along with your original Department of Public Safety renewal certificate, these two documents together are acceptable if the names on both documents match exactly. If you are issued a temporary paper license in lieu of a renewal certificate, that is acceptable only if it is accompanied by a supplemental ID.
If you are in the U.S. military and the expiration of your driver's license has been extended or deferred by the issuing state, the license can be used as supplemental ID along with your U.S. military ID. Depending on the state, the extension or deferral may consist of either a sticker affixed to the license, the designation "military" printed in place of an expiration date or a separate document accompanying the license, usually with a notation that the driver's license is valid until a specific time period after discharge from service.

Military ID without signature

If your military ID does not contain your signature, you must present a supplemental ID.

You must present acceptable and valid identification to the proctor during the test session.
Be sure you are in a well-lit, quiet and private room. The lighting of your room must be daylight quality, and overhead lighting is preferred. If overhead lighting is not possible, please make sure that your light source is not directly behind you because it will make it difficult for your proctor to see you.
Your work area, including the walls, must be free of all unauthorized materials. Your proctor will ask you to pan the room using your web camera to verify there are no unauthorized materials. If materials are found, the proctor will ask you to remove any unauthorized items before testing can begin. Failure to comply may result in dismissal from the testing session and forfeiture of associated fees.
In addition to presenting your identification to the proctor, you may be asked to complete an authentication quiz prior to starting your testing session.
You are allowed to have a single transparent plastic sleeve, a sheet of white paper and dry-erase marker. The blank white paper should be inserted into the sleeve and only a dry-erase marker should be used. You will not be allowed to test with anything else. Before testing begins, the proctor will ask you to show them the scratch paper so that they can verify that it is blank. If you are observed using any documents or unauthorized papers other than the above mentioned transparency sleeve that was approved by the proctor, the proctor will note this discretion and report it to ETS. Your scores may be canceled and associated fees forfeited. Scratch paper is provided so that you can work out problems and for appropriate note taking during timed sections of the test. Scratch paper should NOT be used before the test.
All cell phones, smartphones (e.g. Android^™, BlackBerry^® or iPhone^® devices), PDAs, digital watches and other electronic recording, listening, scanning or photographic devices are prohibited during testing. If you attempt to access or use any of these devices during the testing session, your test session will be terminated, and you will be dismissed from the test and the associated fees will be forfeited. Additionally, your institution will be contacted and your scores may be canceled even if dismissal is not enforced on the day of the test. You may not access your phone during the test to check messages or to check the time.
Food, drinks and tobacco are not allowed during testing.
On occasion, circumstances beyond the test administrator or ETS's control may require a delayed start or the rescheduling of your test appointment. In the event that a technical problem makes it necessary to cancel your test session, you will be offered the opportunity to schedule another test appointment.
If you register for the test and do not show up or do not complete the test, your institution will be notified and associated fees will be forfeited.
ETS reserves the right to ensure the security of test content by recording audio, video and computer activity that takes place during your testing session. Failure to comply may result in dismissal from the testing session and forfeiture of all associated fees.
Breaks are not permitted during the testing session.
If at any time during the test you have a problem with your computer, or for any reason need the administrator, you may speak to the proctor.
All activity during the testing session is subject to recording.
ETS reserves the right to share all information obtained from the test session with your institution.

The proctor is authorized to dismiss you from a test session, and/or your scores may be withheld and ultimately canceled for any actions that violate the policies and procedures set forth herein and/or communicated by the proctor, but not limited to:

Attempting to take the test for someone else or having someone else take the test for you.
Failing to provide acceptable identification.
Obtaining improper access to the test, test answers, a part of the test or information about the test.
Accessing prohibited devices during the testing session. Cell phones, smartphones (e.g., Android, BlackBerry or iPhone devices), PDAs, digital watches and other electronic recording, listening, scanning and photographic devices are not permitted during the testing appointment. If you attempt to access or use any of these devices during the testing session, your test session will be terminated and you will be dismissed from the test and all associated fees will be forfeited. Additionally, your institution will be contacted and your scores may be canceled even if dismissal is not enforced on the day of the test. You may not access your phone during the test to check messages or to check the time.
Using any aids in connection with the test, including, without limitation: mechanical pencils, mechanical erasers, pens, pagers, beepers, watch calculators, books, pamphlets, notes, unauthorized scratch paper, rulers, highlighter pens, stereos or radios with headphones, watch alarms (including those with flashing lights or alarm sounds), stopwatches, dictionaries, translators, compasses, protractors and any handheld electronic or photographic devices.
Attempting to give or receive assistance — communication in any form is not permitted during the test administration. Discussion or sharing of test content or answers during the test administration or after the test administration is prohibited.
Removing or attempting to remove test content. Under no circumstances may test content or any part of the test content be removed, reproduced and/or disclosed by any means (e.g., hard copy, verbally, electronically) to any person or entity.
Using scratch paper before the test or attempting to remove it before showing to the proctor at the end of the testing session.

ETS reserves the right to take all action — including, but not limited to, barring you from future testing and/or withholding or canceling your scores — for failure to comply with test administration regulations or the test administrator's directions. If your scores are canceled, your institution will be notified.
