Skills for the Future helps learners demonstrate and showcase the skills that will power their futures.
Our story
Since 1906, the Carnegie Unit or “credit hour” has served as the bedrock currency of the educational economy. It defines what “counts” as learning, shapes the nature of what is and is not assessed, and determines the basic organization of secondary and postsecondary education. It is increasingly clear that the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to succeed in the 21st century are not singularly demonstrated through time; yet we are currently stuck in a system that conflates time with learning—particularly in school— and ignores the myriad of other ways students can gain valuable skills.
Skills for the Future (SFF) is a joint endeavor between ETS and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, established to drive a radical shift in education from time-based to competency-based learning. We aim to build an assessment system to capture evidence of the set of essential and durable skills—in tandem with disciplinary knowledge—most important for success in high school, postsecondary education, and jobs in the 21st-century economy.
Advancing the science of measurement to power human progress
ETS is a global education and talent solutions organization enabling lifelong learners to be future-ready by advancing the science of measurement to power human progress. ETS is committed to promoting skill development, empowering upward mobility and unlocking more opportunities for everyone, everywhere. Recently, ETS brought on the Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC) to accelerate its mission to prepare learners for the future of work.
Catalyzing transformational change in education
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching is dedicated to catalyzing transformational change in education so that every student has the opportunity to live a healthy, dignified, and fulfilling life. Enacted by an act of Congress in 1906, the Foundation has a rich history of driving advancements in the education sector, including the establishment of TIAA-CREF and the creation of the Education Testing Service, the GRE, Pell Grants, and the Carnegie Classifications for Higher Education.
Our research
Carnegie and ETS are known for their research into learning and skill development. Initial research for Skills for the Future identified a set of durable skills that are predictive of success in a number of key outcomes, including school, college, work, and community wellbeing.
We are now establishing developmental skill progressions to set clear targets for learners and touch points for new assessments. Going forward, we will field trial new tools in novel environments to ensure validity and reliability.
We are guided by a top-notch Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) composed of nationally renowned experts.
